As the regular season approaches, the Patriots still have some money to burn on roster improvements. Though potential offensive additions are getting the most buzz right now, defensive depth is just as crucial for a team looking to contend for a playoff spot.

On Tuesday, New England added a big reinforcement who has a ton of history with the team.

Patriots Sign Trey Flowers

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Pats are signing EDGE Trey Flowers ahead of their first preseason game. The veteran worked out for the team on Monday, and they apparently liked what they saw from the almost 30-year-old.

Flowers enjoyed an incredible run with the Patriots to begin his career. After being a fourth-round pick in 2015, the pass-rusher went on to start 37 games and make 46 appearances overall in New England. He was mighty productive, too, racking up 21.0 sacks, 25 tackles for loss and 5 forced fumbles from 2016-2018.

Flowers’ ability to disrupt off the edge made him an integral part of several top Pats defenses. He helped the team win two Super Bowls (2016, 2018) before departing for the Lions in 2019. Flowers didn’t have nearly as much success in Detroit, though, totaling just 10.5 sacks while dealing with health troubles over three seasons.

Most recently, the vet returned to the AFC East to play for the Dolphins. He appeared in just four games, however, before a foot injury in Week 6 ended up costing him the rest of the 2022 campaign.

Staying healthy will be the key to Flowers proving his worth in his second stint with New England. He’s undoubtedly a force off of the edge when 100%, but that’s been a rare case for the veteran lately.

At the very least, Flowers provides a veteran presence with valuable championship experience. He could immediately emerge as another leader this defense can lean during the year, assuming he avoids the injury bug. And if a familiar environment leads to a bounce-back season for Flowers, then the Patriots’ top-ranked pass rush will be even stronger in 2023.
