3 Offseason Mistakes That Will Come Back to Haunt the Patriots
3. Not Getting Mac Jones a Top Weapon
Again, I’ll start with the optimistic here. JuJu Smith-Schuster was an important addition after losing Jakobi Meyers, and Mike Gesicki is a nice option to have in town. But considering the loss of Meyers, we’re largely running out a group of offensive weapons that projects pretty similarly to last year’s.
That’s not at all what the approach should have been heading into Mac Jones’ third NFL season. We don’t even have to look very far to see how important it can be to get your young QB some help. Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa both broke out in their third seasons, and they did it after their teams got them some elite receiving weapons.
This year is make-or-break for Jones, and it’s frustrating to see that he’ll be forced to prove himself with one of the weakest arsenals in the league.
Am I a full believer in Jones? No. I don’t think it’s a lock he’d flourish with more talent around him. But I do believe the Patriots have failed Jones as much as he’s failed them, and another disappointing season would be in large part a failure from the organization as a whole.
