4. Linus Ullmark

Chances are the Bruins wouldn’t have enjoyed last year’s record-breaking campaign if it wasn’t for Linus Ullmark’s stellar play between the pipes.

The veteran netminder was nearly unbeatable throughout the regular season, going 40-6-1 with a 1.89 goals-against average, a .938 save percentage, and two shutouts in 49 games. Ullmark’s efforts saw him win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender.

But even after winning his first-ever hardware, Ullmark hasn’t been safe from trade rumors. Boston Hockey Now‘s Jimmy Murphy reported in July that “the Bruins did at least gauge the NHL trade market” to see who was interested in the 30-year-old goalie’s services. The salary cap was one of the top reasons as the franchise only has less than $500,000 in cap space, per Spotrac.

Obviously, Ullmark didn’t get moved, but I wouldn’t close the door on a deal just yet. He’s signed for two more years with an average annual value of $5 million, which could be attractive to a playoff team lacking a reliable goaltender.

The Bruins could also be inclined to move Ullmark if fellow G Jake Swayman continues his development. The 24-year-old also enjoyed a strong 2022-23 season that saw him going 24-6-4 with a 2.27 GAA and .920 SV%, indicating that he might be ready to lead Boston’s crease alone.

If Swayman does take that next step, it’d be smart to move Ullmark sooner rather than later. Chances are his last campaign was an anomaly seeing as he never came close to those numbers before. If Ullmark does revert to his old form, it’s only going to be tougher to get value back as time goes on.

At the end of the day, if the offer is right, the Bruins should at least consider moving Ullmark before the trade deadline.
