2. Jonathan Jones / Shaun Wade

Jonathan Jones’ ankle injury remains a major threat to the Patriots’ defense heading into Week 4.

The veteran cornerback originally got banged up at practice on Sept. 14, but he’s now missed two straight games and his status is unclear against the Cowboys.

Last week’s practice report showed Jones hasn’t made much progress in his recovery. He was limited Wednesday through Friday before being ruled on Saturday. The fact that New England didn’t even wait for pregame warmups on Sunday to let Jones test his ankle indicates he likely wasn’t that close to suiting up.

Until Jones logs a full practice, he’s going to be a question mark. With some nice depth behind him, though, and rookie Christian Gonzalez already locking down opponents, the Pats may decide to exercise caution for another week.

If Jones does recover in time to face Dallas, third-string CB Shaun Wade could be the choice to head to the bench. He was inactive in Week 1 — when Jones made his only appearance of the 2023 campaign — with the likes of Jalen Mills and Myles Bryant ahead of him in the CB2 pecking order.
