Heading into their showdown in Week 5, the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints might as well be twins. Their both strong defensive teams built to run the ball, but have been maligned by questionable quarterback play since losing their Hall of Fame signal callers a few years ago.

With both teams seemingly caught in the middle between rebuilding and contending, it shouldn’t be too surprising that oddsmakers are predicting a tight matchup for them this Sunday.

Patriots vs. Saints Week 5 Opening Odds

I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty shocking to see New England favored in Week 5 after its complete disaster in Dallas on Sunday. In what might have been the nadir of the Bill Belichick and Mac Jones era, the Patriots got annihilated in a humiliating 38-3 loss to the Cowboys, dropping them to 1-3 on the season.

This is only the second time this year that New England has been favored, and the other was against the New York Jets. It’s also the first time that the Pats have been favored at home, where they’re 0-2 so far after losing close games to the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins in Weeks 1 and 2.

At least New England knew who its starting quarterback was back then, but now that’s not so clear. Jones got benched in favor of Bailey Zappe last week, and while Jones will probably get the start again in Week 5 that’s far from certain.

The Saints are 2-2, but Derek Carr has been just as bad as Jones. That sets up what will likely be an ugly, low-scoring clash in Foxborough this weekend, making the Under a good play (especially since it’s hit in 10 straight home games for NOLA).

New Orleans also got blown out in Week 4 (to Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), so the Patriots are in a good spot to claim their first home win on Sunday. It’s hard to trust New England’s offense against a stingy Saints defense that ranks top 12 in points and yards allowed, however, so this game really does feel like a coin flip.

The Patriots should prevail, but not by much.
