3 Best Remaining Free Agents the Red Sox Must Target

1. Alex Bregman, 3B

To be fair, the Red Sox have been targeting Bregman all offseason, and he is yet to find a home. Considered as the best free agent still available, the 2-time All-Star has been linked with the Blue Jays, Tigers, Red Sox and Astros, among others.

One issue between the Red Sox and Bregman is the length of the contract, as this could ultimately lead to Bregman signing elsewhere.

Alex Spier of the Boston Globe wrote an article discussing the pros and cons of signing the third-baseman. Bregman will be 31 at the end of March and is demanding a contract of 5 or more years.

"The Sox have remained engaged on Bregman, but multiple sources said earlier this week, the team’s interest had been in a deal of no more than four years. For now, it appears unlikely Bregman would accept a contract of that length given a report by Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 in Houston that Bregman has received five-year offers from “at least three” teams this offseason."

Alex Speier, The Boston Globe

If the Red Sox want to sign Bregman, a more lengthy deal will have to do. Obviously there are risks with bringing in a 30-plus year old on a contract of that length, but the Red Sox have the money to do it.

Bregman is a career .272 hitter and always gives the Red Sox a tough time whenever they match up. A proven winner and an upgrade defensively from Devers, Bregman should be at the top of Boston's wish list in what is a competitive market for the longtime Astro.

Bregman going to an AL contender like the Tigers, Blue Jays or back to the Astros would be the worst case scenario for Boston, and if the Red Sox offer doesn't increase in length, that is the most realistic scenario.
