3 Former Patriots Who Were Busts With Their New Teams in 2024
By Jack Gurley
2. JuJu Smith-Schuster
After a brief and disappointing stint with the Patriots, former standout receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster signed a one-year deal to reunite with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs hoped Smith-Schuster could revert into the dominant player he once was. Unfortunately, he hasn't shown any resemblance to the premier receiver he was only a few seasons ago.
Smith-Schuster had a minimal effect on the Chiefs' offense throughout the regular season. He started only seven games for the team and finished his forgettable campaign with only 231 receiving yards.
He did make it on the Chiefs playoff roster; however, it is unlikely that he will make any sort of a significant impact on their Super Bowl chances.
Smith-Schuster, who is now 28 years old, will not likely be back with the Chiefs once this season concludes. It will be interesting to see which team he ends up with next, as he still has plenty of potential, although he is now coming off of two consecutive disappointing seasons.
1. Mac Jones
After a disappointing three-year stint with the Patriots, first-round draft pick Mac Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
Jones was hoping for a fresh start with the Jaguars but struggled to find consistent success with his new team even when he had the surprising opportunity to serve as the starting quarterback for a big chunk of the season.
After Trevor Lawrence was sidelined for multiple weeks with an injured shoulder, Jones took over at the quarterback position. While under center, Jones struggled to win games as the Jaguars starter and finished his season with a 2-5 record.
He also threw an alarmingly high 8 interceptions in seven starts. He finished his season with an 80.5 quarterback rating, the second-lowest rating of his career.
Jones is at a definite career crossroads following this disappointing season. His opportunity to be a starting quarterback will likely fade, and he will likely be relegated to being a backup for the remainder of his once-promising career if he can't somehow find a team to let him fight for a starting job in training camp.
