3 Jerod Mayo Replacements Patriots Must Consider After Terrible 2024 Season
By Jovan Alford
3. Kliff Kingsbury
With the Pats using a top-three draft pick on Maye in 2024, they might want an offensive-minded head coach to lead the team. An underrated replacement not named Ben Johnson, could be Kliff Kingsbury.
Kingsbury is the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator after spending last year in the collegiate ranks at USC (senior offensive analyst). The last time we saw Kingsbury as a head coach was in 2022 with the Arizona Cardinals.
Kingsbury’s four-year tenure with the Cardinals was disappointing as he had a 28-37-1 record. In fact, Kingsbury’s lone winning season with the Cardinals was in 2021 (11-6).
During that season, Arizona finished second in the NFC West but lost 34-11 to the Los Angeles Rams in the wild card. In his last season as head coach, the Cards finished with a 4-13 record in 2022.
However, the former Arizona head coach has done a good job of re-igniting his coaching career in Washington as he’s helped rookie QB Jayden Daniels become the potential Offensive Rookie of the Year Award winner.
Heading into Week 18, Daniels has completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 3,530 yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He’s also racked up 864 rushing yards and six touchdowns despite being sacked 43 times.
The Commanders’ offense is ranked third in rushing yards per game (156.6) and fifth in scoring (28.9 points per game) this season.
Meanwhile, New England’s offense has struggled to score points (16.6 – 30th in the league). However, the Patriots have found some success on the ground (118.3 rushing yards per game – 13th).
If the Patriots can fix the offensive line, which is a huge problem, Kingsbury could do something with Maye, who has some dual-threat abilities. Maye doesn’t have Terry McLaurin at his side, but he has DeMario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, Hunter Henry, Kayshon Boutte, and Rhamondre Stevenson.
There’s some talent on this Patriots’ offense, they just need someone with a more dynamic scheme that plays to the strengths of Maye.
