4 Red Sox on Thin Ice This Offseason

The Boston Red Sox missed the playoffs for the third straight season in 2024. As a result, these four players are finding themselves on thin ice this MLB offseason.

3. Tyler O'Neill, OF

Just a few months before the 2024 campaign began, the Red Sox further bolstered the outfield by acquiring Tyler O'Neill from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for two players. The Canadian slugger was coming off an injury-plagued 2023 season and the hope was that he could have a healthy and productive tenure in Boston.

On one hand, O'Neill went on to amass 31 home runs and 61 RBIs — the second-best performances of his career. On the other hand, the 29-year-old OF was limited to just 113 contests, meaning he's now missed an average of 68.3 games in the last three seasons.

And while O'Neill was one of the Red Sox's hottest batters at times, he also had a reputation for disappearing, too. An example of that is the fact that he only batted .189 with a .289 on-base percentage and 37 strikeouts in his final 89 ABs to end the season.

O'Neill is a free agent this season and the Red Sox making him a qualifying offer is far from guaranteed. As mentioned before, Boston's outfield is jam-packed at the moment and he hasn't done enough to separate himself from the pack, especially since he hasn't looked like a Gold Glove-caliber player since 2021.

If the Red Sox want to round out their roster, it might be in their best interest to move on from O'Neill.
