4 Red Sox on Thin Ice This Offseason

The Boston Red Sox missed the playoffs for the third straight season in 2024. As a result, these four players are finding themselves on thin ice this MLB offseason.

4. Trevor Story, SS/2B

Remember when Trevor Story signed a six-year, $140 million contract with the Red Sox back in 2022? The hope was that his presence would help address Boston's middle infield situation through 2028.

Instead, Story's contract has quickly become one of the MLB's worst. For starters, the former 2011 first-rounder has barely seen any action since putting pen to paper. Injuries have limited him to just 163 games over the last three years, meaning he's essentially missed two full campaigns during that stretch.

Story's performances have been mixed whenever he's been healthy enough to play. He's registered 21 HRs, 90 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases since making his way to Beantown, however, he's also tallied 210 strikeouts with a .232/.296/.397 slash line. For reference, the most strikeouts he's had in a season was when he recorded 191 in 201.

Back in January, MLB insider Jared Carrabis reported that the Red Sox were shopping Story. Even though his trade value was allegedly too low at the time, that likely won't stop Breslow from seeing if he has any interested suitors this winter. After all, the last thing Boston wants is to pay $72.5 million across the next three seasons for an injury-riddled infielder who barely plays.

If there's even a chance that the Red Sox can get out of Story's contract this offseason, the organization will be better for it.
