6 Patriots on the Chopping Block After Week 7 Loss
By Ryan Bunton
5. Alex Van Pelt
Van Pelt has frequently drawn the ire of Patriots fans for his play calling, and rightfully so. Van Pelt was far from New England's first choice as offensive coordinator during the hiring process this past offseason, and his lack of experience as a play caller made his hiring questionable. With Drake Maye's development so paramount to the future of the franchise, it is also worth asking if a more modern offensive coordinator would be better for Maye.
There are suggestions that Ben McAdoo – currently employed by the Patriots as the senior offensive assistant – could supplant Van Pelt as the offensive play caller. McAdoo has served as an offensive coordinator for the New York Giants (2014-15) and Carolina Panthers (2022) and was also the head coach of the Giants from 2016-17.
When a fanbase is clamoring for Ben McAdoo, things are dire. Mayo made the quarterback change, could he also make a change at offensive coordinator?
