6 Red Sox on Thin Ice After Missing Postseason 3rd Year in a Row
By Ryan Bunton
3. Isaiah Campbell
Campbell was acquired in Nov. 2023 from the Seattle Mariners in a one-for-one swap for infielder Luis Urias. Campbell made his MLB debut in 2023 for the Mariners and had a strong rookie campaign, holding opponents to a 2.83 ERA across 27 appearances. When Craig Breslow swung the trade for the reliever, it was done with the hope that Campbell could take the next step in his development in 2024 and become a reliable arm out of Boston's bullpen.
Unfortunately, that didn't quite come to fruition as Campbell had a disastrous start to the 2024 season. In his first seven games, the righty got lit up to the tune of a 12.79 ERA before he was placed on the injured list on April 12. Campbell didn't return to the big leagues until June 24 and promptly surrendered three earned runs in only 0.1 innings pitched. He was sent back to Triple-A Worcester three days later and didn't appear in another MLB game in 2024.
If there is any optimism for the Red Sox to cling onto, it is that Campbell was solid in Triple-A – posting a 2.20 ERA in 16.1 innings of work.
A 16.20 ERA and only 6.2 innings pitched? That definitely falls well short of what the Red Sox were expecting Campbell to contribute in 2024 and is borderline disastrous.
