Don't look now, but the New England Patriots' receiving room might actually be pretty good?
With their recent blockbuster trade, landing A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots bolstered their receiving corps. And as it stands, fans have reason to believe the team's receiving room isn't just a glaring weakness anymore; it might genuinely be one of their strengths.
A.J. Brown trade has leveled up New England's receiving corps
For years (many, many years), the Patriots' offense has had a receiving problem. They lacked a true No. 1 option for a long time. Stefon Diggs, who was 32 and fresh off an ACL tear last season, is the closest New England has had to a true No. 1 receiver since Jakobi Meyers, Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, or Randy Moss, depending on who you ask.
And to say that's far from ideal would be a massive understatement.
Fortunately for New England, it looks like things are trending upward. And the team's recent acquisition of Brown may have solidified that.
Brown: Super Bowl champion in 2024, is fresh off a 78-reception-1,003-yard-seven-touchdown campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he will take the top off the defense. Romeo Doubs: 55 receptions, 724 yards, six touchdowns with the Green Bay Packers last season, will do severe damage in the intermediate passing game, especially with the addition of Brown.
Kayshon Boutte (assuming he stays): has become Drake Maye's favorite target and is developing into a real deep threat. He also played a huge role in New England's divisional round victory against the Houston Texans last season, when he recorded three receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown (a spectacular one-handed grab that essentially clinched the win).
DeMario Douglas: dynamic receiver who can line up on the outside and in the slot and can make plays due to his quickness. Mack Hollins: reliable intermediate-to-deep threat, caught Maye's only non-garbage-time passing touchdown in the Super Bowl. Kyle Williams: young, speedy receiver who can really blossom for the Patriots this year.
Patriots' receiving room has some real depth
New England's receiving room is filled with talent from top to bottom, and that's not even factoring in Hunter Henry and rookie Eli Raridon at tight end.
Plus, in a Josh McDaniels-led offense, there are reasons to believe that the Patriots' offense (which already looked pretty good last year) is about to take a huge step forward.
Is another Super Bowl appearance on the menu in New England? It's way too early to say, but there is no denying that the team is looking to build off the momentum they created last season. And after trading for Brown and signing Doubs this offseason, they are seemingly better equipped to prove that last year's success wasn't just a one-time thing.
