A.J. Brown trade could turn Patriots' offense into nightmare for rest of NFL

Acquiring Brown would elevate the rest of New England's wide receivers and help Drake Maye in his development.

The New England Patriots are in position to have a much better receiver room in 2026. With the rumors of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown being traded to New England in June, we could see every other receiver have a leap in production because of the attention Brown demands.

He is a coverage-dictating receiver, and opposing defenses will need to double-team him to stop him from taking over the game. This will give the other receivers favorable matchups and allow them to thrive in 2026.

With that being said, let's dive into each (potential) receiver on the roster and what can be expected of them next season.

A.J. Brown (post June 1st trade), the No.1 weapon

The worst-kept secret in the NFL is that A.J. Brown will be a Patriot this summer. So, for this preview, we are going to be under the assumption that Drake Maye will have his number one receiver.

Brown is the true alpha receiver that the Patriots have been lacking for years now, and if they can land the Eagles star, the offense could go absolutely nuclear. Maye is one of the best deep ball throwers in the NFL, and giving him a weapon that can win at every level of the field would be amazing to watch.

Overall, Brown would turn this offense into one of the best in the league.

Romeo Doubs, the chain mover

Romeo Doubs has the potential to be one of the best off-season additions for the Patriots. He was a very reliable weapon in Green Bay, and in Josh McDaniels' offense, he is the big, strong chain mover that every quarterback loves to have.

He wasn't used to his full potential with the Packers, but in this offense, he could have the best year of his career, especially playing alongside Brown. With Brown taking all the attention, Doubs will feast on the intermediate routes and could become a first-down machine.

Kayshon Boutte, the YAC weapon

Kayshon Boutte was a very good player in 2025 and made some spectacular grabs. He was used a lot as a downfield threat, but that may not be his best position.

He was used on the outside out of necessity, but if the Patriots finally land a true X receiver in Brown, he could be used all over the formation like he was at LSU. This could benefit not only the offense as a whole, but Boutte as well. Going back to his days in college, he was a strong target who thrived in yards after the catch, and allowing him to be used all over the formation would maximize his potential.

Kyle Williams, the separator

Kyle Williams is one of the shiftiest receivers on the roster and has great separation on his route-running. The ability to separate is a skill that every NFL receiver needs to possess, but some are much better at it than others. Williams has the chance to make a massive year-two leap, and if he is used more by Josh McDaniels, he could become one of the most electric weapons on the roster.

If Williams takes a big step forward in his development, the Patriots could have a multitude of riches at the receiver position.

DeMario Douglas, the gadget player

One of the most intriguing receivers going into 2026 is DeMario Douglas. He is similar to Williams with his shiftiness and ability to separate, but he is less of a downfield threat. Douglas is more of a gadget player who can be moved all over the formation to give him favorable matchups.

Every offense needs speed and agility, and Douglas gives them just that. He is another player who would benefit from the addition of Brown, because he will thrive in the short to intermediate routes where he can win with suddenness and explosion.

Mack Hollins, the leader

Mack Hollins is one of the best leaders on the team and is the veteran that the Patriots need heading into 2026. He is a great presence in the receiver room and is a big, reliable target that Maye loves to throw to. Maye can count on Hollins in crunch time, and he is the type of leader that elevates not just the receiver room, but the roster as a whole.

Can the Patriots' receiver group be elite?

With the additions of Brown (likely) and Doubs, this receiver group is arguably the best in the AFC East.

Brown and Doubs will be the go-to guys, while the rest of the offense will be opened up for Boutte, Williams, and Douglas. Each receiver on the roster has the potential to be a massive contributor and could help Maye continue to develop into one of the league's best quarterbacks.

Overall, fans should be very excited about this potential group, and they have the chance to turn into one of the best squads in the league.
