Alex Cora Outlines Surprising Plan for Red Sox Free Agent Target

Last season, the Boston Red Sox finished in third place in the American League East with a record of 81-81. And, after two months of MLB free agency, the Boston Red Sox have done a good job of improving their roster and look like a formidable threat in the AL. As I addressed in my previous article, the team’s top priority is to spend in free agency and one of the team's glaring needs is a right-handed bat.

While the Red Sox have done nothing to help balance out their left-handed-dominant lineup, the team remains interested in a top free agent, former Houston Astros third baseman, Alex Bregman, who has shown a willingness to move to the right side of the diamond this offseason.

To accommodate Bregman, the team would have to move current third baseman Rafael Devers to another position, or Bregman would need to be willing to switch. Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed his plan if Boston acquired Bregman, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.

"Alex was a Gold Glover at third base. We all know that. But in 2017, I had a conversation with him and he needed to play third because it was (Carlos) Correa (at shortstop) and (Jose) Altuve (at [second]). I always envisioned Alex as a Gold Glove second baseman. His size, the way he moves, it felt kind of like, ‘You will be a second baseman.’"

I would love this move for the Sox. Since long-time second baseman Dustin Pedroia stopped playing regularly due to injuries after the 2017 season, the team has had a revolving door of second basemen. Having some stability in the position would be a tremendous boost to the team.
