Plainridge Park was originally an existing track in Massachusetts that offered harness racing and simulcast wagering. In 2015, they added slots, electronic table games and video poker and became the first “casino” to open in the Commonwealth. Though under Massachusetts gaming law it is technically considered a “slots parlor” and can also be considered a “racino” given the availability of wagering on horse racing. .

Plainridge Park Casino history

While Plainridge Park Casino opened in 2015, the venue has been running since 1999 when it opened as Plainridge Racecourse offering live harness racing and simulcast horse race wagering. 

When the Expanded Gaming Act was passed in 2011, making casino gaming legal in the Bay State, four commercial casino licenses became available. 

Penn National (now Penn Entertainment) was granted a license in February 2014 and Plainridge Park added slot machines and electronic table games to the venue. This made it the first casino/racino in the state of Massachusetts upon opening on June 24, 2015. Technically, under Massachusetts law, Plainridge Park is considered a slots parlor.
