With the free agent period becoming official, the Celtics waited a day before formally acknowledging the departure of 2024 champions Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet. It was curious as to why there was a delay, as some fans speculated bigger moves were on the horizon. It turned out that there was an adjustment to the Jrue Holiday trade.
Once that trade was settled, the Celtics rattled off multiple farewells and thank yous to their departing players on social media. Even though fans knew that this was the most likely outcome this offseason, it was still bittersweet to say goodbye to players who contributed to banner No. 18. In his press release, Brad Stevens went out of his way to acknowledge Holiday and Porzingis' contributions, as reported by Brian Robb.
"We are so thankful for KP and Jrue and the time we had together in Boston. They were great Celtics whose impact on our organization went well beyond the court. They were integral parts of two great teams, including one which brought us all a new banner. Their impact on this organization will last a long time, and we look forward to celebrating them when they return to the Garden this season."Brad Stevens
Brad Stevens' Comments Ensure that Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis Will be Treated to a Warm Return Next Year
The Celtics will get two looks at home, at what Porzingis looks like on a re-vamped Atlanta Hawks squad, which should be a contender in the East. The Celtics will only get one chance to see Holiday back in Boston when the Trailblazers come east. On the nights these former champions return to TD Garden, fans should expect a significant acknowledgement from the Celtics if Stevens’ comments provide any clues.
Stevens’ job often means making difficult decisions including letting go of key contributors or fan favorites. His comments show that both Holiday and Porzingis were both significant members of the Celtics, even if it was brief.
