The Boston Celtics suffered another surprise loss on Thursday when they fell to the Chicago Bulls at home. They are now 11-4 at home and 2.5 games behind East leaders, Cleveland Cavaliers.

One of the more surprising aspects of the game was the extended minutes Jaden Springer played. The former first-round pick usually only plays garbage minutes when the game is already out of hand. Against the Bulls, he saw 13 minutes of action and finished with zero points on 0/2 shooting and four rebounds.

After the game, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Springer's work on the boards and defense. He said the 22-year-old shooting guard played well, per Boston Herald's Zack Cox.

"I thought he does a good job on the offensive glass and his individual defense and just kind of wanted to match the speed there. I thought he played well."

This can only be seen in relation to the trade deadline. Springer and his $4 million salary for this season are considered to be the most likely trade candidates for Boston. The Celtics are one of the most expensive teams in the league and will likely think about shedding some salary and saving luxury tax at the deadline. The best way to do so is to move the seldom-used Springer for a player making the minimum.

Mazzulla and the organization presumably want to show the league what Springer can do. The former Sixer is likely seen as a negative salary by other teams. By showcasing him more, the Celtics are trying to change the perception of Springer around the NBA.

Thursday wasn't the ideal start for Springer. His defense has always been intriguing but if he can't show more on the offensive end, it is hard to imagine the Celtics getting much in return.
