Following last season’s record-setting 18th championship, the Boston Celtics ownership group, Boston Basketball Partners, announced they would sell a ‘majority interest’ in the team by early 2025:

"The controlling family of the ownership group, after considerable thought and internal discussion, has decided to sell the team for estate and family planning purposes."

Additionally, according to CBS Sports, the sale would be conducted in two parts, with the Grousbecks selling 51% of the franchise to the new owner over the next few months and the rest to be sold to the new owner in 2028. Wyc Grousbeck, the team’s governor, hopes to maintain his role with the team until all shares are sold in 2028.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Globe reported that there are at least "four interested parties," and the price is expected to exceed $6 billion.

As a diehard Celtics fan, I hope that Wyc maintains his role with the team until then. Since the Grousbeck-led group purchased the franchise in 2002, the Celtics have consistently been one of the best teams in the league. During his tenure, the team has made nine Eastern Conference Finals appearances, four Finals appearances, and won two championships.

In addition, Wyc Grousbeck has shown a willingness to spend on his team. In the last few years, he’s given out multi-year extensions to the entire starting five, including two super-max contracts to homegrown superstars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum and 6th-man-of-the-year candidate Payton Pritchard.

That being said, keeping this championship team together will not come cheap. According to Bobby Marks, between salaries and the league’s luxury tax penalties, it would cost more than $500 million. Given the last two decades of success, if the team’s new owner is willing to spend the money, the Celtics will remain one of the top championship contenders for years.
