Jaylen Brown is eligible to sign a two-year contract extension in July worth around $142 million with the Boston Celtics. And while there have been some discussions about what his future in Boston should look like (i.e., should the team just trade him for someone like Giannis Antetokounmpo and avoid signing him to a new deal this offseason?), this really shouldn't be much of a decision.
The Celtics absolutely need to sign Brown to this extension and ensure he stays with the team for the long haul.
Boston should extend Jaylen Brown instead of including him in a big trade
I almost feel like a broken record, but I can't stress enough that, unless he specifically asks for or demands a trade, the Celtics shouldn't get rid of Brown anytime soon.
The Georgia native has long been a crucial part of Boston's success (the team doesn't make the finals in 2022 without him, and it doesn't win it all without him in 2024), and he still has a ton of good years left. Brown is still only 29 years old, is fresh off the best individual season of his career, and is a proven good fit in the Celtics' system.
Trading him just to avoid paying him for the long haul doesn't make any sense, especially if it's for Antetokounmpo, who is about two years older and has a growing injury problem.
The Greek native could make some sense in Boston, especially because of his hypothetical fit next to Tatum (Antetokounmpo can dominate inside the arc while Tatum can do some damage on the perimeter, and they are both fantastic defenders and playmakers). But the risks are way too important to ignore, and given that trading Brown is the only real way the Celtics can make this trade happen, it's best for them to just move on and look elsewhere for a potential big move.
Jaylen Brown is vital to the Celtics' success moving forward
Brown is far from a perfect player, but he is one of the best players in the NBA. The Celtics had to cut some costs recently (just look at their massive fire sale in 2025) to get under the second apron, but at this point, it should be a full go. They should sign Brown to a new deal and make sure that he sticks around for the long haul as the team looks to re-enter the title picture.
