The Boston Celtics will look very different going into next season. Following the end of the season with a 2nd round loss to the New York Knicks, all signs point to the Celtic's looking to cut down on the cost of the roster.
While most moves that people have been discussing revolve around trading either guard Jrue Holiday or Center Kristaps Porzingis, the first move of the off-season for the Celtics should involve forward Sam Hauser.
Celtics Should Say Goodbye to Sam Hauser to Begin Offseason
Since joining the Celtics as an undrafted free agent in 2021, Hauser has seen his role and playing time increase each season. Once a member of the Celtics' end-of-game lineup, Hauser slowly became a mainstay in the Celtics' rotation. Through his play, Hauser earned a 4-year, $45 million extension with the Celtics last summer. While it's been great to see Hauser improve over time, that extension means his run with the Celtics could be over.
When looking at the Celtics' cap situation, Hauser's contract might not stick out, but that is the reason why he should be the first to be moved.
Due to his contract being on the smaller side, multiple teams could take Hauser in and not need to send any money back to the Celtics. While trading Hauser wouldn't save the Celtics from the second apron, it would be a good start for them. While Hauser is someone the Celtics could bring back, with how the roster is looking, they might have cheaper alternatives.
Celtics Have Replacements Lined up
What hurts the chances of Hauser returning is two members of the current roster who'll be back and considerably cheaper, Jordan Walsh and Baylor Scheierman. The 3rd and 2nd year forwards each could fight for increased playing time with Hauser departing. While Walsh still has room to grow, Scheierman could easily slot into the role Hauser played and not look out of place. Torrey Craig could also return if he decides to. While Hauser could remain a Celtic, if they want to avoid the second apron penalties, he should be the first moved due to the depth at his position.
