When Payton Pritchard signed a four-year, $30 million extension prior to the 2023-24 season, the move was widely viewed as a team-friendly deal by the Boston Celtics. Two years later, it’s clear the deal has turned into an even bigger bargain than initially thought.

After seeing inconsistent playing time during his first three seasons, Pritchard carved out a role as the lead guard off the bench during the Celtics' 2023-24 championship season. In that role, he averaged 9.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 22.3 minutes per game, bringing energy, playmaking, and reliable three-point shooting to the team’s second unit. His ability to push the pace and provide instant offense became a key element of the team’s depth, especially in high-pressure playoff moments.

Last year, Pritchard played even better. In the 2024-25 season, he captured the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award after averaging a career-high 14.3 points along with 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. His improved scoring efficiency and expanded offensive repertoire turned him into one of the league’s most dependable reserves, often closing games alongside Boston’s starters.

Payton Pritchard Will Earn Himself a Big Contract With Upcoming Breakout Season

Now, heading into the 2025–26 season, Pritchard has an opportunity to build on that momentum. In the absence of superstar wing Jayson Tatum, he will have an even larger role in the Celtics' offense.

If Payton delivers another career year, he can expect a large pay raise. Whether it’s through another extension with Boston or in free agency down the line, the 27-year-old guard is positioning himself for a lucrative next deal while continuing to prove that he’s far more than just a spark plug off the bench.

For the Celtics, Pritchard’s rise offers both an on-court boost and a financial challenge — balancing his market value with the team’s long-term roster and salary cap plans. But for now, Boston will gladly rely on Pritchard’s steady hand and fiery competitiveness as they aim to stay competitive in the wide-open Eastern Conference.
