Celtics Hit 2 Birds With 1 Stone With Latest Projected Jrue Holiday Trade

Every Celtics fan is aware that the team will look vastly different next season than it did in prior years. Jayson Tatum's devastating injury and the cap crisis are forcing Brad Stevens' hand to revamp the roster. The most likely candidates not to be wearing a Celtics uniform next season are Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Considering the fact that Porzingis' trade value is likely at an all-time low due to his health concerns, it's safe to assume that Holiday may be on his way out of Boston.

Fortunately for the Celtics, the veteran guard should still have suitors on the trade market. Holiday has an unblemished reputation as one of the best teammates and proven winners in the league. At age 34, he is not the wrecking ball defensively as he used to be, but he is still a valuable veteran. In fact, MassLive's Brian Robb reported recently that the Los Angeles Clippers are interested in acquiring him.

A potential Holiday deal between the two sides would likely include Norman Powell and Derrick Jones Jr. coming to Boston.

This trade has a chance to be a win-win trade for both sides. For the Celtics, it allows them to shed some long-term salary as Powell is on an expiring contract worth $20.4 million for next season, and Jones Jr. makes $10 million for the 2025-26 season. They also acquire two rotation-level players who could help them stay competitive next season during Tatum's absence.

The Clippers, on the other hand, add a perfect complement for James Harden. They add a much-needed winner in Holiday, who could help give them an identity and a defensive floor. Losing Powell, who is coming off a career season, would certainly hurt, but he is 32 years old and will warrant a lucrative, long-term extension. Upgrading him for Holiday without giving up any significant assets should be attractive to them.

While Boston likely prioritizes financial relief in offseason trades, any deal that also keeps them as a competitive playoff team next season will be preferable. This deal accomplishes that.
