2nd Round - Pick 32: Chaz Lanier, SG, Tennessee
Chaz Lanier, 23, played five years at the college level, his first four with North Florida and the last with Tennessee. In his career, Lanier averaged 11.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, shooting 40.2% from three.
Lanier had a breakout year with the Volunteers, averaging 18 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, shooting 39.5% from three on 8.2 attempts. He played a pivotal part in Tennessee’s Elite 8 appearance, averaging 20.8 points, 5 rebounds, and shooting 36.1% from three.
Out of Lanier's 14.6 shots per game, 8.2 of them were threes. His catch-and-shoot ability, paired with his elite three-point shooting, makes him a perfect fit for Joe Mazzulla’s offense.
"Dynamic shooter who thrives launching off movement actions like screens and handoffs. He has deep range, smooth mechanics, and a lightning-quick release."Kevin O’Connor, Yahoo Sports
The downside of drafting Lanier is that he is 23, which raises questions about whether he can develop in other areas. Lanier is also undersized for his position, as he's listed at 6’ 4”, which can be an issue if he doesn’t become a better defender.
Lanier’s game has some similarities to Sam Hauser's, as both are lethal shooters, but Lanier is more aggressive attacking the basket while Hauser is a better defender. With the trade rumors surrounding Hauser and the Celtics, Lanier would be the perfect replacement for Hauser.
Lanier will have to battle his way to get minutes on a loaded backcourt, but he should be an upgrade over Jordan Walsh and JD Davison. His instant offense and ability to move without the ball can provide the Celtics with points off the bench, something which they desperately need.
