The Boston Celtics enter the 2025-26 season with more questions than answers in their frontcourt. Former Toronto Raptors big man Chris Boucher is the lone proven option for head coach Joe Mazzulla. Between off-season additions, Luka Garza, Josh Minott, and second-round draft pick Amari Williams, there is some potential upside but lots of uncertainty. Last season was Neemias Queta’s first year in an everyday role, and he showed flashes, averaging 5.0 points per game in 62 games. Given the depth behind Boucher, Simmons would at the very least offer a proven rotational option in the frontcourt.
Last season, Simmons, 29, split time between the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers and averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 25 minutes. While these stats are a far cry from his Philadelphia 76er prime, where he averaged 15.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.7 assists and earned 3 straight All-Star nominations, his skill set still offers value. At 6-foot-10, Simmons brings defensive versatility, playmaking, and size that could help stabilize a shaky rotation.
Celtics Should Take Chance on Ben Simmons
Yes, Simmons’ struggles are well-documented. Injuries, confidence issues, and his lack of shooting have derailed what once looked like a superstar career. But as a reclamation project, the risk is minimal for Boston. Simmons would not be expected to carry the offense; instead, he could thrive in a complementary role as a defensive anchor, secondary ball-handler, and matchup problem in small-ball lineups.
The 25-26 season is shaping up to be a transition year for the Celtics. With All-Star wing Jayson Tatum likely out for the year, and most of the championship core gone, President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and head coach Joe Mazzulla have the freedom to experiment with different lineups. Taking a chance on Simmons now could reveal whether he has enough left to be part of Boston’s long-term plans when the team reenters contention in 2026-27.
The Celtics don’t need Simmons to be an All-Star again. They just need him to be reliable, versatile, and available. Given the state of their roster, that’s a gamble worth making.
