Heading into the Summer League, the Boston Celtics had a few questions they needed to clarify: Where do they stand with recent draft picks such as Jordan Walsh, JD Davison, and Baylor Scheierman? How much development does first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez require? And is there anyone available who might be able to contribute to the Celtics' frontcourt?

It looks like the Celtics got some answers from their time in Las Vegas. It appears that Walsh and Scheierman have developed enough to be part of the rotation, although Scheierman's shooting efficiency is something to be alarmed about. Hugo Gonzalez is a work in progress, but looks to have potential. And there was one standout in the front court, Charles Bassey, who only played three games.

It may not have been a huge surprise that Bassey contributed and performed at the level he did. He's a four-year veteran who spent time in San Antonio, a place known for their player development. Bassey proved to be a force in Las Vegas, averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds on 70% shooting. Not bad for someone who was a last-minute invite.

Unfortunately for the Celtics, his performance may have caused other teams to take notice. Reports out of an Italian media outlet Pianeta Basket indicate that Bassey is on the radar of Virtus Bologna, another team that is struggling to find frontcourt solutions. While this news is great for Bassey, it's terrible news for Boston.

Celtics May Lose Out on Charles Bassey if They Don't Act Fast

The EuroLeague starts its season on September 30th, and it is likely that Virtus Bologna would like to have their roster in place before then. The Celtics would just be starting training camp, and while an invitation might be a blessing for most, it by no means guarantees a roster spot. Bassey may be looking for a sure thing.

That's only one option available to Bassey, though. The center market is slim pickings this season. A quick browse of available free agents is going to disappoint. After his performance, Bassey could provide depth or a pinch-starting option for many NBA teams. Unless the Celtics feel confident in the combination of Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and Xavier Tillman, they should be offering Bassey a spot on the roster.

Bassey may not be a long-term answer at center, but based on the current state of the roster and his domination of the Summer League, he's deserving of a spot this season. Considering the fact that he seems to have other options available, Bassey may quickly become a hot commodity.

The Celtics should have all options on the table when it comes to the frontcourt, and there is no reason to let Bassey pass through their fingers. Brad Stevens should act fast or be adamant that the solution to the center problem in Boston is already on the roster.
