The Boston Celtics are in a rut right now. After getting blown out by the Sacramento Kings at home last Friday, they barely beat the bottomfeeder New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday before suffering their worst loss of the season on Wednesday, a 13-point defeat against the 10-31 Toronto Raptors. Boston is now 28-12 and 6.5 games behind the Eastern Conference leaders, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With the top of the East looking much stronger than last year, the Celtics may be in trouble. They still have more talent and depth than anybody in the league, but they desperately need to get out of their midseason malaise.

The players are well aware of the situation. After the loss to Toronto, Kristaps Porzingis didn't mince any words. He called his team out for the "weak performance" and admitted that they have no spirit or character, per Darren Hartwell of NBC Sports Boston.

"I think we played with no spirit, with no personality. It’s just a weak performance from us, honestly. We just play with no personality right now."

These may be hard truths for the Celtics to swallow. The team that played with a chip on their shoulder all of last season seems to struggle to find the same hunger after the championship last season.

When you are the reigning champions, it is expected that your opponents will take their best shot at you night in and night out. In an 82-game regular-season grind, it may be hard to summon the energy and intensity to hit them back with the same force.

That is exactly why repeating as champions is such a difficult task. Unfortunately, the 2024-25 Celtics have not shown so far that they have what it takes to overcome that challenge and establish themselves as an all-time great team by repeating as champions.

Porzingis' admission is a good start to turn things around but the on-court results must start coming soon before the Celtics start tumbling further down the standings.
