When the Boston Celtics' first summer league game started, fans noticed a player who was getting ready to play who wasn't on the previously announced roster. Four-year veteran center Charles Bassey was playing for the team. Bassey suited up for the first three games, in which he averaged 15.3 points and 11 rebounds. While it seemed like Bassey was destined to go play overseas following his stint with the Celtics in the summer league, he now seems to be holding out for an NBA spot.
According to Celtics reporter Noa Dalzell, Bassey is now focused on securing a contract with an NBA team instead of heading overseas to continue his career. While Bassey continues to look for an NBA roster spot, it may not be with the Celtics.
Charles Bassey Could Be a Final Roster Spot Option for the Celtics
If the Celtics are interested, they have an open roster spot and could use a center with NBA experience, as they only have the unproven Neemias Queta and Luka Garza as traditional big men.
During his time in college, Bassey played at Western Kentucky for three seasons before declaring for the 2021 NBA draft. He'd be selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 53rd pick in the draft. Bassey would only see time in 23 games during his rookie season before being waived by the team in October of 2022.
For the next three seasons, Bassey would play for the San Antonio Spurs, initially signing a two-way deal with the team. Bassey would eventually be converted to a standard deal in February 2023. While things looked bright for Bassey, injuries would slow him down.
In March of 2023, Bassey would be diagnosed with a Patella fracture that would end his season. Things would only get worse for Bassey as in December of 2023, he'd tear his ACL, once again ending his season early.
Now, Bassey looks to continue his NBA dreams after coming back from these two brutal injuries, after impressing during the summer league.
