The New England Patriots finished their preseason with a whimper after a 2-0 start, suffering a 42-10 blowout loss to the New York Giants on Thursday night. A 30-plus-point loss is never fun to witness, but the silver lining is that it was only an exhibition contest, which helped shed some light on the Patriots' underwhelming backup situation and the improvements that must be made.

There's nothing New England can do about the disappointing loss at this point, and all that's left to do is move forward. Tuesday's 53-man roster deadline is the next event on the Patriots' offseason calendar, but that didn't stop them from cutting ties with a veteran name almost immediately after the preseason finale.

Patriots Release OG Tyrese Robinson After Finale Preseason Game

ESPN's Mike Reiss is reporting that the Patriots "have begun the process of releasing players," and have cut offensive guard Tyrese Robinson. The former Oklahoma Sooner was signed to New England's 53-man roster in November and even played 61 offensive snaps in Week 18's 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills.

Robinson's release might come as a surprise to some because he wasn't even half bad this preseason. The 6-foot-3, 317-pound blocker didn't allow a single pressure on 23 pass blocking downs, and also did a solid job at creating rushing lanes, resulting in a 72.5 run block grade on Pro Football Focus. He also earned marks of 85.8 for pass protection and 78.7 for overall offense.

Robinson was playing more right guard snaps as the preseason went on, but the Patriots already had Mike Onwenu and Layden Robinson, which likely capped how far he could rise on the depth chart. Rather than forcing the standout preseason performer into a third-string role or onto the practice squad, the Patriots are allowing him to find a bigger role elsewhere. Whether or not he will find one remains to be seen.

The Patriots' releasing Robinson is the first of many cuts that will be taking place in the next few days. While some will be surprising like this one, others won't be. Either way, New England fans will be closely monitoring social media, anticipating what the initial 53-man roster will eventually look like.
