Alex Bregman was one of the best signings the Boston Red Sox have made since the turn of the decade. After 2020, it was pure awfulness. It was quiet in almost every offseason when it came to superstar acquisitions for the Red Sox. The closest they ever were to one was Trevor Story in 2022 or Kenley Jansen in 2023. Now Jansen's gone to the Angels, and Story has been injury-riddled for most of his deal (except this year).
Then came 2024, when CBO Craig Breslow decided to go big. He signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract with opt-outs and deferrals. One of these opt-outs is after this season, and he's already made it public that he wants to sign with a team long-term, hinting at a likely opt-out of his current deal.
Red Sox Can't Let Alex Bregman Leave
If Bregman opts out, the Red Sox better be the first to call his agent, Scott Boras. Due to the amazing season that Bregman is having, many teams will be willing to break the bank. He's batting .299, hitting 16 home runs, with 50 RBIs, 86 hits, 22 doubles, an OPS of .921, and an OPS+ of 153 in 76 games.
The problem is, if he leaves because the Red Sox weren't willing to pay the pretty penny for him, the organization will be losing more than just a player. They'll be losing franchise credibility. Alex Bregman was a fan favorite when he came into Boston, immediately adapted to the Fenway Faithful. He loves Boston, and the fans love him back. His swing is a perfect match for Fenway Park. The match was made in heaven this past offseason, and they're risking him leaving.
Now, it's not that bad of a situation right now. Currently, Bregman is looking towards Boston as the city he wants to stay in, but what's going to make you think Boras won't get into his ear? He's done so with many other players, and Bregman can be just the same as the others. Just look at his contract right now and tell me that it didn't have Boras written all over it.
Bregman is replaceable as a player, but he's worth more than that. He's the clubhouse leader that many youngsters look up to for advice. Just like how Justin Turner was with Jarren Duran, among others, except Bregman is a future Hall of Famer with more pedigree to his name.
Money talks, and it says so in Bregman's current deal with the Red Sox, so let's see what happens. But know this: They can't survive without him.
