Not that anybody should be surprised, but Christian Gonzalez has looked incredible in his first two games this season, and he's proving that the New England Patriots made a good investment in him.
Just before the start of this season, New England signed Gonzalez to a four-year, $135 million contract that makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. Obviously, this is a very lucrative deal (especially given the Patriots' history), but everybody in New England was clamoring for it, and it's easy to see why.
The 24-year-old is already one of the best defensive players in the league, and the Patriots' entire defense is built around him and his strengths. Gonzalez's ceiling is so high it basically doesn't exist, and fans should be excited to see what his future in New England will hold.

Through the first two games this season (mostly lined up against Jaxon Smith-Njigba and DK Metcalf, by the way), Gonzalez has allowed a total of 24 yards on five receptions, and he is leading the league with three pass deflections so far, according to PFF.com. Additionally, he is allowing just a 44.3 passer rating, which is incredibly impressive... even if it was against Drew Lock and the 2026 version of Aaron Rodgers.
The Oregon alum is easily one of the best cornerbacks in the game today, and he is going to play a big role in the Patriots' future. Let's not forget, this is the same guy who (without even exaggerating) single-handedly prevented New England from suffering a bigger blowout in its Super Bowl last season with his clutch plays.
Gonzalez isn't even in his prime yet, but he's still one of the best players on the field every time he suits up. That's been the case ever since he entered the league in 2023, and it's only gotten better every year since.
For the Patriots to return to the Super Bowl this season (which, admittedly, is going to be an incredibly tall task), they need Gonzalez to keep up this level of play. He's going to be tasked with covering the opposing team's best receiver every week, and he has already proven that he can rise to the occasion. There will be a ton of pressure on him moving forward, but he hasn't given fans or the team any reason to think he won't be able to meet those expectations.
Gonzalez has the potential to be one of the best cornerbacks the game has ever seen when it's all said and done. The Patriots 100% made the right call to keep him around (not that it was much of a debate anyway), and early on in his new contract, Gonzalez is proving that.
