Drake Maye Breaks Silence on the Patriots' Josh McDaniels Hire
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel reunited with one of his former teammates last week when offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was added to the 2025 coaching staff. McDaniels held various coaching roles during Vrabel's eight-year stint as a Patriots player and most recently served as the team's OC from 2012 to 2021.
Now that McDaniels has had some time to reacquaint himself in New England, one of the franchise's most important offensive pieces has opened up about his coordinator's hire.
Patriots News: Drake Maye Reacts to OC Josh McDaniels Hire
On Friday morning, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio to discuss his feelings about McDaniels re-joining the franchise. Unsurprisingly, the up-and-coming signal-caller is looking forward to learning from the 48-year-old OC, according to NFL insider Mike Reiss.
"I'm fortunate to be able to have (McDaniels) come in who has done it at a high level and learn from him coaching one of the best (quarterbacks) ever — the best ever in my opinion, Tom Brady."
That's as pretty good of a reason as one could give when it comes to wanting to work with McDaniels. The Patriots racked up six Super Bowl victories throughout his first two stints with the franchise with half of those titles coming with him as the offensive coordinator.
Not only is Maye excited to absorb McDaniels' experience, but he's also looking forward to diving into any old tapes and game footage the latter might have from the Brady Era.
"I have a great chance to go back — all those years of film he has in the little database. It's all their play calls, all Coach McDaniels' stuff, and what he did with Tom," Maye said. "It's fortunate for me to go back and study it up and get ready for this next season."
While there's no guaranteeing he'll be the next Brady, Maye showed some promising upside throughout his rookie season. The former UNC QB completed 225-of-338 passing attempts (66.6%) as he tallied 2,276 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and an 88.1 passer rating across 13 appearances (12 starts).
That's without mentioning his ground success, having amassed 421 rushing yards and two TDs on 54 carries. Maye's combined performance through the air and on the ground culminated in his being named to the 2025 Pro Bowl roster.
Hopefully, Maye's ascent will continue with McDaniels' help. Patriots fans will have a better idea of what the duo's partnership will look like as the 2025 offseason ramps up.
