Even though Isaiah Thomas hasn't played for the Boston Celtics since the 2016-2017 season, the point guard remains in a special place for a lot of the members of the fanbase.
The two-time All-Star with the Celtics had an iconic 2016-17 campaign, finishing fifth in MVP voting and helping lead the team to the Eastern Conference Finals against all odds. After that, injuries unfortunately caught up to him, and the 5'9" guard failed to make the same impact in the rest of his career. Now, at age 36, Thomas may be finally giving up on his NBA dream and looking for opportunities overseas.
Since his Celtics days, Thomas has played for eight different teams, never for longer than a season with any of them. The journeyman veteran had a few stints in the G League as well, as he seemed desperate to revive his NBA career over the last several years. This speaks volumes to Thomas' love and passion for basketball, but it may be the end of the road for Thomas in the league.
Isaiah Thomas May Be Looking for Overseas Opportunities
To no one's surprise, Thomas is not giving up on his basketball dreams. Last week, he was seen commenting on a post by Olympiakos head coach Giorgos Bartzokas that highlighted his team's need for a point guard. The Euroleague giants' head coach added that they were working to add a PG, and Thomas left an eyes emoji, which was interpreted as his desire to potentially join them (h/t @thedunkcentral).
This came on the heels of Thomas paying a visit to Greece earlier this summer, when he attended a basketball camp in Athens, per Basketnews.com. Thomas said at the time that he "would love to play in those type of atmospheres, especially something like this. It's super cool to see this in person and be able to experience this. You could tell it's a different feeling being here," before adding that he "could score 40 seeing that," referring to the crazy atmosphere in European basketball stadiums.
So far, Thomas' intended desire to play pro basketball overseas hasn't led to a contract. Euroleague teams like Olympiakos are highly competitive, high-level organizations, and whether they would have any interest in a 36-year-old point guard with no prior international experience is unclear. At the same time, Thomas has proven himself to be a highly respected veteran and locker room presence in all of his stops in his career.
Hopefully, that will be enough for the ex-Celtic to continue living his dream.
