The New England Patriots have made a lot of changes since the end of the 2024 season. Jerod Mayo was fired as head coach and replaced by Mike Vrabel, and the last three months have been filled with turning over the roster.
While that means exciting free agent additions such as Milton Williams, Carlton Davis and Robert Spillane, it also means several players are making their goodbyes. For one Patriots cornerback, it prompted him to send a message to fans upon his departure from Foxborough and look back upon his time in New England.
Former Patriots Cornerback Jonathan Jones Bids Classy Farewell to New England
Jonathan Jones was one of the players that was swept out with Vrabel taking over. An undrafted free agent by the Patriots in 2016, Jones spent all nine seasons of his career in New England, starting as a slot corner and working his way toward the boundary.
Jones’s time with the Patriots came to an end this week when he signed a one-year contract worth up to $6.5 million with the Washington Commanders. On his way out, Jones took to his Instagram account to thank the fans and the organization.
“I can’t begin to express how much these last nine years have meant to me,” Jones wrote. “As a young, undrafted kid out of Auburn, I came in with everything to prove. This organization took me in, believed in me, and gave me the opportunity to live out my dream. Together, we won two Super Bowls, overcame challenges, and created memories that will stay with me forever.
“To the fans – your passion, energy and unwavering support have meant the world to me. Through every high and low, you stood by us and I will always be grateful for the love you’ve shown me and my family. My kids have grown up as New England fans, and no matter where life takes us, we will always carry that with us."
“To everyone who played a role in my journey here – thank you for believing in me. Thank you for giving me the chance to prove that I belonged. The standard of excellence in New England is second to none, and I am honored to have been a part of it."
“New England will always be home. I will forever be a Patriot.”
Jones racked up 432 total tackles, 57 passes defensed, and 11 interceptions during his career but will look to write a new chapter with the Commanders next season. The Patriots will try to do the same as they enter next season with Davis, Christian Gonzalez, and Marcus Jones in starting roles.
