We’re at the quiet point in the NBA offseason where we have no action until training camp, which is in late September. That means barring any moves, this will be the Boston Celtics roster heading into the upcoming season.
Although they currently have an open roster spot, the Celtics aren’t expected to fill it anytime soon. This makes sense considering the Celtics are treating this year as a gap year, with Jayson Tatum out indefinitely.
Since they’re emphasizing developing their younger players and saving money, there’s no reason for them to go after any free agents, even though it would’ve been nice if they went after this former Celtic, who’ll be playing this upcoming season overseas.

Former Celtics G Lonnie Walker Is Heading Overseas
After splitting last season between the Lithuanian Basketball League and the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers, Lonnie Walker will be playing basketball overseas next year. Walker signed a three-year deal worth approximately $10 million with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.
The 76ers declined Walker's $2.9 million option for the upcoming season, which made him a free agent. In his 76ers tenure, Walker averaged 12.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, shooting 35.4% from three in 20 games.
It’s surprising that the Celtics, now having the financial flexibility, didn’t have any interest in signing him. Walker signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the team last August, which came as a surprise to many.
He played great in the preseason games, averaging 7.3 points in 16.4 minutes, but that’s all the action he would end up getting with the Celtics. Walker was released days before the start of the season since keeping him would’ve cost the Celtics eight figures.
Though he looked like a great fit with the Celtics, they were already deep into the second apron and keeping him wouldn’t have been worth it. The Celtics also had plenty of depth at forward, and it would’ve been hard to give him minutes.
Now, with all their departures this offseason, it would’ve been the perfect opportunity to bring him back. Although there won’t be a reunion at the moment, Walker does have an NBA exit clause after each season, meaning there’s a chance he could end up back with the Celtics.
