Former Boston Celtics guard Lonnie Walker IV found his way back to the NBA this season after Boston waived him in October. Walker signed a two-year, $3 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers in mid-February after playing overseas with Zalgiris Kaunas in the EuroLeague.

The 26-year-old Walker averaged 12.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 23.9 minutes per game with the Sixers (20 games). Based on his performance this season, the Sixers could bring the ex-Celtics guard back for the 2025-26 season, as he has a $2.9 million team option.

Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer said in a recent mailbag that he believes the former Celtic could be back with the Sixers, but also mentioned that it depends on the team’s finances and who they get in the draft.

"A lot will depend on where the Sixers stand financially after the draft and who they expect to snag in free agency. But my early answers to both are yes. Walker can score the ball and create his own shot. The reserve shooting guard is also someone who can step into a bigger role if the Sixers have injuries. Acquiring Walker in February became a priority for the Sixers after Eric Gordon required season-ending surgery on his right wrist."

As things currently stand, the Sixers are scheduled to have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which gives them the option to take either Ace Bailey or V.J. Edgecomb. If the Sixers take Edgecomb, then there might not be much room for Walker, as they play the same position.

And not to mention, Walker’s future might be tied to whatever Philadelphia does with Quentin Grimes, who is a restricted free agent, and Eric Gordon, who has a $3.5 million player option for next season.

That said, in the case that the Sixers don’t pick up Walker IV’s option, it would behoove Boston to inquire about a potential reunion with the veteran, given the potential changes on the horizon this offseason.
