The Celtics traded the 22-year-old guard and two draft picks (2030 second round and a protected 2027 second round) to the Houston Rockets in exchange for a protected 2031 second-round pick.
Springer didn’t play a single game with the Rockets as Houston immediately waived him. Now, the former Celtics guard will get 10 days to prove to the Jazz that he deserves to be brought back and potentially earn a longer contract.
It wasn’t surprising to see Boston move Springer as it helped lower their tax penalty and opened up another roster spot. The Celtics filled one of those two roster spots, signing veteran forward Torrey Craig a couple of days after the deadline.
Springer appeared in 26 games this season for the Celtics, averaging 5.4 minutes per game off the bench.
One of his best games before the trade deadline happened on Jan. 22 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Springer stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, four steals, and two rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
The former first-round initially joined Boston last season. The Celtics acquired Springer at the trade deadline from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick. Last season, Springer played in 17 games, averaging 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game.
After one year at the University of Tennessee, the young guard has struggled to find his footing in the NBA.
However, given that he’s only 22 years old, the hope is with more consistent playing time at the NBA level, Springer can develop into a solid NBA player. The Jazz are a perfect team for Springer to play with other young guys looking to prove themselves.
