The Boston Celtics are preparing for what's sure to be a disappointing season, having already virtually waived the white towel following the devastating Achilles injury suffered by Jayson Tatum in the playoff series loss to the New York Knicks.

Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis have both been traded as its become clear that Boston intends to tank and put itself in a position to get the best draft pick possible. This is a plan for 2027 and beyond and there are no expectations that the Celtics even make the playoffs next year.

Boston's roster will look much different than usual in the coming months, and one former playoff hero remains unemployed in August with the season right around the corner.

Former Celtics C Al Horford Still Looking for a Job in August

39-year-old center Al Horford, who won a championship with Boston and spent seven total years with the franchise, albeit in two separate stints, remains a free agent. He'll undoubtedly be signed before the season, and rumors have linked him to the Golden State Warriors, yet it looks like it'll be his final year in the league, barring a surprise.

The Celtics are focused on developing their young talent for good reason. Since there isn't a championship window in 2026, it made little sense to retain the aging Horford. He can now go pursue another championship or high-value contract, though it's unclear what exactly his priorities are at this stage.

A beloved 18-year veteran with demonstrable leadership chops and impressive play, Horford will be fondly remembered as one of the better players of this era of Boston basketball. He came to the franchise in 2016 and despite leaving for two seasons, came home and won his only ring. This is someone the city loves, and all fans should be rooting for him to get one more chance at a championship before he hangs it up.

Expect him to be signed within the coming weeks, perhaps even as soon as mid-August. For now, though, Horford is still looking for a gig with the new season right around the corner.
