The Boston Celtics will almost certainly go through sweeping changes this offseason. The looming cap crisis, combined with Jayson Tatum's devastating injury, will force GM Brad Stevens to part ways with a few key contributors and revamp the roster.
The frontcourt will especially look different. Al Horford's future remains uncertain, Kristaps Porzingis is a likely trade candidate, and Luke Kornet is a pending free agent who may have played himself out of Boston's price range. The Celtics will have to bring in reinforcements for depth in the offseason.
Former Celtic Daniel Theis on the Verge of Major Overseas Success
One of those reinforcements could be a familiar face. Former Celtic Daniel Theis is proving that he still has gas left in the tank during his overseas stint.
Theis signed with AS Monaco in February after starting the season on the New Orleans Pelicans. The 33-year-old big man has been playing a large role for Monaco since then, helping them make it to the Euroleague Final. Theis will have a chance to win his first Euroleague title against Fenerbahce Beko on Sunday.
In 14 Euroleague games, between the regular season, playoffs, and the Final Four, Theis has averaged 11.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.8 blocks in 22.5 minutes per game on 40% shooting from three for AS Monaco.
At this stage of his career, Theis can probably not play extended minutes in the NBA, but he could still be a depth piece for the Celtics. He knows the team and the organization and has established himself as a competent veteran.
Which direction the Celtics will go this offseason remains to be seen. Whether they would consider the former veteran is unclear, but Celtics fans would surely be happy for Theis, who played five seasons in Boston and had his best years as a pro in the NBA.
