In 2022, defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. played a key role in a New England Patriots defense that ranked ninth in the NFL in both total points allowed and points per game. That year, Wise started 16 games and posted career highs in several key categories: eight sacks, 56 total pressures, and 32 tackles. His performance earned him a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 74.9 β€” the best of his career.

However, fast forward to the 2024 season β€” the final year of his contract β€” and Wise appeared to regress. Although he suited up for 15 games, his production dropped noticeably: five sacks, just 20 total pressures, and only 11 tackles. His PFF grade fell to 59.7, suggesting a decline in impact and consistency on the field.

Despite the dip in performance, Wise found a new opportunity in free agency, signing a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Washington Commanders. The move fits a broader trend under GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, who have added several experienced veterans in recent off-seasons.

"Wise follows the pattern of free agents the Commanders have brought in under Adam Peters and Dan Quinn. He’s an experienced veteran, having played eight seasons in the NFL and has been part of winning teams, having spent all eight seasons in New England, where he won two Super Bowls with the Patriots."

While Wise brings leadership, two Super Bowl rings, and plenty of experience, he is not the same player he once was with the Patriots. If the Commanders are expecting him to come in and replace the offseason departure of Dante Fowler Jr. and his 10.5 sacks from last season, they will be disappointed.

At this stage of his career, Wise may be better suited as a rotational depth piece rather than a full-time edge presence.
