With OTAs underway, teams have an opportunity to get a first look at their roster. Although the practices are non-contact and players won’t be in pads, it allows teams to examine their players and make a move, if necessary.

This past weekend, the San Francisco 49ers decided they needed to bolster their defensive line, trading for Bryce Huff of the Philadelphia Eagles. The trade is expected to be finalized later this week, giving the 49ers another capable pass rusher outside of Nick Bosa.

This move is a crushing blow to a former New England Patriots pass rusher and current free agent, as the trade reduces the number of teams in need of his services.

Matthew Judon Remains a Free Agent

It’s almost been three months since teams were allowed to sign free agents, yet former Patriot Pro-Bowler Matthew Judon is still a free agent. Judon spent three seasons on the Patriots, earning two Pro Bowl appearances with the team.

In his short time in New England, he made an immediate impact on the defense, posting 32 sacks in 38 games while becoming a fan favorite. However, he had an unfortunate ending to his Patriots tenure, suffering a torn lower bicep in Week 4, ultimately ending his tenure with the team.

Judon would play the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons after being traded by the Patriots. His lone season with the Falcons was disappointing, posting 5.5 sacks, one interception returned for a touchdown, and 25 tackles in 17 games.

Judon, 32, showed clear signs of regression coming off of surgery, but that shouldn’t halt teams from signing him. The Falcons traded for Judon because they didn’t have pass rushers, and they tasked him with being their best pass rusher

At this stage of his career, Judon shouldn’t have that weight on his shoulders. Instead, he should be used as a situational pass rusher similar to how the Buffalo Bills used Von Miller.

But with the Bryce Huff trade, Judon’s chances of getting on the field next season are diminishing.
