The free agent market for wide receivers already had several well-known names available to be signed heading into Wednesday before New England Patriots fans saw an AFC rival make a surprising personnel decision.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars pulling off a stunner and electing to release veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis just 14 months into the three-year contract he signed this past offseason, that list of free agents just got a bit longer. That development, coupled with the Dallas Cowboys addressing a need at wide receiver by trading for George Pickens, could be bad news for former New England Patriots wideout Nelson Agholor, as he is still looking for a new home within the league.
Despite being the No. 20 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Agholor has bounced around the league his fair share and will be joining the sixth franchise of his career if he doesn't return to the Philadelphia Eagles, Las Vegas Raiders, New England, or the Baltimore Ravens.
As Patriots fans likely remember, Agholor signed a two-year, $26 million deal with New England in 2021 and failed to live up to the expectations that came with such a contract. The 2022 season with the Patriots was arguably the worst of the former University of Southern California's professional career, as he finished sixth on the roster with just 31 catches for 362 yards and two touchdowns.
Given the bad experience the Patriots' coaching staff, and fan base for that matter, had with Agholor during his stint in New England, the odds of the wideout returning to the franchise under new head coach Mike Vrabel seem to be slim to none. That is something that Patriots fans are likely just fine with as well.
Agholor will probably latch on with a team at some point but he could very well be on thin ice from the get go with whatever franchise that may be.
