The Boston Red Sox are well on their way to competing for a playoff spot this season, but there are some players who are simply looking for a job. Like any team, the Red Sox have had players come and go throughout the years, and some have had their issues latching on with another major league team.

One former Red Sox hurler has been looking for a job the past few seasons but hasn’t been able to stick in the major leagues. His one season in the Boston organization didn’t go well, and he’s still looking for work after being designated for assignment by an American League East Division rival.

Yankees Designate Former Red Sox Pitcher Geoff Hartleib for Assignment

The New York Yankees announced on Wednesday morning that they have designated right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb for assignment. The move was made to add fellow pitcher Cam Schlittler to the major league roster ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, but it wasn’t a difficult decision based on Hartlieb’s performance in the Bronx.

Hartlieb appeared in two games for the Yankees this season but allowed three runs in each outing. Aside from the 40.50 ERA in the majors, Hartlieb earned the callup with a 3.34 ERA, 26.2% strikeout rate, and 6.9% walk rate at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Unfortunately, this has been the story of the 31-year-old’s career. He owns a 20-18 record and a 4.17 ERA over 261 career innings at Triple-A, including a 5.16 ERA in 61 innings with the Red Sox affiliate in Worcester in 2022. He’s spent time with seven different organizations since his professional career began as a 29th-round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2016 draft and owns a 7.92 ERA in 80.2 career innings in the major leagues.

This is probably why Hartlieb never made it to Boston during his time in the organization and has trouble sticking around with a major league team. The Yankees have five days to trade Hartlieb or place him on waivers, but with his second DFA of the season, he could accept a deal to go back to Triple-A and try to work for another chance to pitch in the majors.
