During this point in the MLB regular season, teams across the league are bringing up prospects and vets from the minor leagues to see if they can fill a need on the 26-man roster.

However, to make room for those players, these same teams must cut ties with certain players, who will either return to the minor leagues or potentially elect free agency. Former Boston Red Sox infielder Pablo Reyes was recently in this situation.

Last week, the 31-year-old Reyes was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees after appearing in 25 games with the big league club. Reyes signed a minor league deal this offseason with the Yankees after spending the 2024 campaign in Boston and the New York Mets.

Reyes went through waivers unclaimed and decided to take his chances in free agency. That was the correct gamble, as the former Red Sox utilityman is staying in the Big Apple.

Ex-Red Sox Veteran Pablo Reyes Signs With New York Mets

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported on Saturday that the 31-year-old journeyman has signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets, who sent him to Triple-A Syracuse.

This will be Reyes’ second stint with the Mets in as many months. The veteran joined New York last May in a trade from the Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations. Reyes only played in one game with the Mets, as he spent most of his time with their Triple-A affiliate.

Boston hoped Reyes could continue being a solid bench bat last season after his performance at the plate in 2023 (.287 with nine doubles, two home runs, and 20 RBI across 64 games). He also had seven stolen bases, but struggled to replicate that in 2024.

The veteran utilityman slugged a mediocre .183 at the plate with two doubles and five RBI in 21 games. Reyes’ statline with the Red Sox last year is almost similar to what he did with the Yankees this season (.194 with one double and two RBI).

That said, the former Red Sox utilityman will look to have much better success in his second stint with the Mets as he tries to get back to the majors this season.
