The MLB All-Star break is right around the corner, which means multiple teams will be figuring out if they will be buyers or sellers ahead of the trade deadline next month.

For teams like the Boston Red Sox, they are not ready to go into full seller mode yet. The Red Sox are currently two games out of the final wild card spot in the American League. That said, they could look to move a vet or two if the deal makes sense.

However, until then, the Red Sox will hope that the players on the big league roster can hold down the fort. And if they can’t, Boston will explore the minors to find an adequate replacement.

One former Red Sox pitcher had a chance to return to the majors recently after Boston sent him packing earlier this season. But he sadly didn’t get the opportunity to pitch and will have to find another team.

Ex-Red Sox Hurler Michael Fulmer Released by Chicago Cubs

On Thursday, the Chicago Cubs announced that right-handed reliever Michael Fulmer was designated for assignment.

The veteran relief pitcher was just called up from Triple-A Iowa earlier this week after he had a 2.96 ERA across 15 appearances. Fulmer pitched in two games with the Cubs this week. He tossed three innings while only giving up two hits and posting one strikeout.

With Fulmer getting DFA’d, the Cubs have about a week to trade him, or if he gets through waivers unclaimed, he can elect free agency.

Fulmer joined the Cubs on a minor league deal on April 22 after the Red Sox released him a day prior on April 21. The veteran reliever signed a minor league contract with Boston in the offseason.

The right-handed pitcher had a 3.09 ERA in three appearances at Triple-A Worcester before the Red Sox called him up on April 13.

Fulmer struggled immediately in his first and only appearance with the Sox. He gave up four hits, three earned runs (one home run), two walks, and recorded two strikeouts in 2.2 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 14.

Not too long after, the Red Sox designated Fulmer for assignment and eventually cut ties. It seems like Fulmer got into a groove with the Cubs, so it will be interesting if Chicago finds a trade partner. If not, the ex-Red Sox reliever won’t have to wait long to find a new team.
