The Boston Red Sox have been quite busy over the last few days, making additions to their lineup as they push for a playoff push down the stretch.
Earlier this week, the Red Sox signed veteran first baseman Nate Lowe, who was surprisingly designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals. Then, on Thursday, the club decided to promote top prospect Jhostynxon Garcia (aka the password), who is hitting .303 with 17 home runs and 66 RBI in Triple-A.
In addition to those moves, Boston also designated Abraham Toro for assignment, which is the news most players don’t want to hear. While that is all taking place, a former Red Sox reliever has found himself a new opportunity, as he’s bounced around the major leagues.
This time, the ex-Red Sox right-handed pitcher will be joining a surging club in the AL West, with the hopes of getting back to the big leagues.
Ex-Red Sox Hurler Michael Fulmer Signs with Seattle Mariners
According to MiLB.com’s transaction log, the Seattle Mariners signed former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Michael Fulmer to a minor league deal. The Mariners immediately sent the veteran hurler to Triple-A Tacoma.
It’s been a whirlwind season for the 32-year-old Fulmer, who began the 2025 season with the Red Sox. Fulmer made one appearance out of the bullpen in the majors and played in three games (two starts) before he was DFA’d on April 18.
From there, the Red Sox outrighted Fulmer back to Triple-A Worcester, where he elected free agency two days later. It didn’t take long for the ex-Boston reliever to find a new job, as the Chicago Cubs signed him to a minor league deal on April 22.
Fulmer made two appearances with the Cubs, but spent the bulk of his time at Triple-A Iowa, where he pitched well (2.95 ERA in 15 games/2 starts).
However, the Cubs kicked Fulmer to the curb in late June, which led him back to free agency. Fulmer then signed a minor league pact with the Kansas City Royals on July 3. He made 15 relief appearances at Triple-A Omaha and saw his ERA balloon to 5.89.
After a month and some change with the Royals’ organization, Kansas City cut ties with the former Red Sox, leading him to Seattle.

The 32-year-old hurler has already made an appearance with Triple-A Tacoma, allowing one hit, one run, but recording a strikeout in one inning against Oklahoma City.
We’ll see if Fulmer can get back on track with the Mariners after a rocky tenure in the Royals’ organization. Even if he doesn’t get called up, a strong rest of the season in the minors could net him a major league deal in the offseason.
