The New England Patriots desperately need to address the edge rusher position in the 2026 draft. If an elite player at another position falls to them in the first round, though, there is more than enough talent available for Mike Vrabel and company to address the edge in the second round.
One of the best fits in New England is Illinois edge rusher Gabe Jacas. Jacas has a lot to offer and is one of the better edge prospects in this draft. He is projected to be selected in the second round, but with the Patriots sitting at pick 63, they may need to trade up to get him. So, let's dive into all things Jacas, and his fit in New England.
What Type of Prospect Is Jacas?

One of the first words that comes to mind when describing Jacas's play style is violence. He plays with the type of aggression that every team wants from a pass rusher. He has the size and strength to bully opposing offensive tackles, and his 33-inch arms give him the length he needs at his position.
At 6'4, 260 lbs, his frame is built to last in the pros, and he can set the edge when needed. His combination of strength and violence makes him a perfect fit in a Mike Vrabel defense. He will consistently collapse the pocket and ruin an opposing quarterback's day. The tools he possesses, and the fire he plays with, are why I believe Vrabel will do whatever it takes to get Jacas to New England.
How Will Jacas Fit into the Patriots’ Defense?

Jacas is arguably one of the best fits for New England in this draft class. He was a captain at Illinois, and plays like every snap is his last, which is ideal for the Mike Vrabel culture. The Patriots' defensive line already has some studs in the middle in Milton Williams and Christian Barmore, so adding Jacas into the mix would be very entertaining to watch.
Williams and Barmore will take most of the attention from opposing offensive lines, which gives Jacas a huge advantage. He would likely only be one-on-one with offensive tackles, and he could feast in those battles. His bull-rush ability at his size would give him the chance to be a bully in this Patriots' defense, and he would have a massive impact, even as a rookie.
When Could the Patriots Draft the Illinois Captain?

Jacas is a projected second-round pick, with some projecting him as a top-50 pick. He has been gaining momentum as the draft approaches and is currently climbing up draft boards. If the Patriots stay at pick 63, they will probably miss out on the Illinois star.
Luckily for New England, they have plenty of draft capital to use however they see fit, and could package some picks to move up and get their guy. I believe the potential of Jacas will be too good for Vrabel and company to pass up, and they will be aggressive in their pursuit of the talented pass rusher.
