The Boston Red Sox opened this weekend's series against the Minnesota Twins with a 6-1 victory on Friday night, however, the club's latest win wasn't without a massive loss.
Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas left the game in the second inning after trying to beat out a throw to first base. The 25-year-old slugger had to be stretched off the field before being sent to a local hospital, prompting manager Alex Cora to deem the situation a "significant knee injury."
Lots of people mentioning how Casas clipped the leg of Twins 1B Ty France, but watch his left knee buckle just before that - the last time he his left foot hits the ground before the bag. Best guess is the injury happened then. @NESN @RedSox pic.twitter.com/wbePedBnpQ

Although Red Sox fans tried their best to be optimistic about the situation, it wasn't long before the club confirmed their worst fears.
Red Sox 1B Triston Casas Dealing With Rupture Patellar Tendon, Prompts Several Roster Moves
The Red Sox announced the severity of Casas' injury on Saturday morning, and it isn't good, to say the least. MassLive's Chris Cotillo is reporting that the former 2018 first-rounder is dealing with a "ruptured his left patellar tendon."
With SportsMD listing a potential post-surgery recovery time of "four to six months," there's a good chance that Casas' 2025 campaign is over.

Abraham Toro up. Bernardino back, Guerrero optioned.
Naturally, Casas' significant injury prompted the Red Sox to make some roster moves. Boston has called up 1B Abraham Toro from Triple-A Worcester while southpaw Brennan Bernadino was activated from the bereavement list. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Luis Guerrero was optioned to Triple-A.
Casas' 2025 campaign is potentially over after only 28 games and 98 at-bats. Even though he started the year slowly, the Miami, FL native's performance was improving in recent weeks, culminating in two home runs, seven RBIs, five walks, and a .273/.429/.545 slash line in his last seven games (22 ABs).
Red Sox fans were hopeful that Roman Anthony or Vaughn Grissom would be called up to fill in for Casas, but that wasn't the case. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow recently told Boston.com's Kaley Brown that the team doesn't want to change Anthony's position, whereas Grissom is still learning to play first base in the minors before trying to do the same in the Majors.
Instead, Toro will get the chance to shine. The former 2016 fifth-round pick tallied six HRs and 26 RBIs in 94 games with the Oakland A's last season, and is slashing .323/.417/.500 with two homers, 13 RBIs, and 15 walks in 27 appearances with Worcester in 2025.
Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Bernadino, too, after dealing with a personal matter that kept him away from the Red Sox since Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 lefty has been terrific to begin the new season, going 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 10 strikeouts across 11 innings in as many relief appearances.
With Bernadino returning to the bullpen, Guerrero is the odd man out this time around. He played well since being called up over a week ago, pitching four scoreless innings with a trio of strikeouts in three relief appearances. If he continues pitching that well in the minors, he might be back in Boston sooner rather than later.
Significant injuries can completely flip a club's campaign on its head, and it'll be interesting to see how the Red Sox navigate their future without Casas around. Boston will continue the season holding the seventh-best 2025 World Series odds (+1900) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
