Jaylen Brown’s latest comments may be a quiet power play few are noticing

Maybe Jaylen Brown is just looking for a big payday, not a trade.

Jaylen Brown has caused quite a stir since the Boston Celtics were eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoffs in the first round. Brown famously claimed that 2025-26 was his favorite season on his stream, despite being less than two years removed from winning the 2024 Bill Russell Finals MVP Award during the franchise's Banner 18 season.

What is the endgame for Brown here? Does he want his own team to get the bulk of the shots on, sending a message that he no longer enjoys being the 1A to Jayson Tatum in Boston? The Athletic's Zach Harper isn't buying that for a minute. In fact, Harper believes Brown is making a power play to get another maximum extension, as opposed to angling for a trade somewhere he can be the unquestioned alpha.

"What should we think of this? If you want to be dramatic about it or buy into drama, then I’d say lean toward the idea of Brown wanting to be the main star on his own team. That wouldn’t shock me," Harper wrote.

"However, I tend to think this is all just pointed toward a contract extension. The soon-to-be-30-year-old is extension-eligible this offseason. He has two guaranteed years left at $57 million and $61 million. Then he has a player option for nearly $65 million. An extension would tear that option up and give him another two years at over $140 million total. My guess is he’s angling for that extension."

Jaylen Brown may not want a trade, but he definitely wants a max deal

Never mind that Brown never claimed he wanted out, but he has every reason to appreciate the effort the team had in Tatum's absence. Not to mention, seeing Tatum successfully return was likely a thrill for the California alum.

It's easy to take Brown's comments the wrong way, but there really aren't all that many trades available, since the only legitimate one seems to be off the board.

If we know nothing else about Brown's future in Boston or elsewhere, we do know that a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade with the Milwaukee Bucks is off the table.

Per The Stein Line's Jake Fischer, the Celtics have never been a serious suitor for Antetokounmpo, and vice versa. Antetokounmpo is more interested in playing for the New York Knicks than shipping up to Boston.

Other than Antetokounmpo, there aren't many sensible players you'd consider trading the five-time All-Star for. Brown's ceiling is higher than most, and if Brad Stevens can build a better-fitting team next season, and Tatum can return to full health, there isn't a better situation out there for either party.
