Jerod Mayo Admits Stone-Cold Truth About Patriots as a Team
By Jovan Alford
The New England Patriots jumped out to a shocking 10-0 lead in the first half against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday morning. However, they couldn’t hold the lead as the Jags started to impose their will and outscored the Patriots 32-6.
The Jaguars made it a point of emphasis to dominate the Patriots at the line of scrimmage, rushing for 171 yards as a team. Nonetheless, it was another disappointing loss for a New England squad that has dropped six straight games.
After the game, New England first-year head coach Jerod Mayo didn’t mince his words when speaking about his team’s performance against the Jags.
“Look, disappointing game. We came out and started fast, but what I would say look we are a soft football team across the board,” Mayo said (h/t ESPN’s Mike Reiss). “We talk about what makes a tough football team, that’s being able to run the ball, that’s being able to stop the run, and that’s being able to cover kicks and we did none of those today.”
“They controlled the ball for most of the day, their run game averaged over 4.5 yards a carry, our run game. Not sure what the average was but it wasn’t good. Back to the drawing board, we can’t sit there and pout.”
As you can imagine, Patriots fans weren’t too excited about Mayo’s comments as most of them placed the blame at his feet.
The players must execute when it comes to your team being labeled “soft” and not doing the little things that Mayo talked about. But Mayo and the rest of the Patriots’ coaching staff deserve some of the blame.
The Patriots’ offense had a great first-scripted drive, but couldn’t do much else after that. New England will try to fix its problems this week at practice as they will invite Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets to Foxboro in Week 8.
